ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Civil Engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including public works such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewerage systems, pipelines, structural components of buildings, and railways.
The sprawling Mechanical Engineering wing accommodates various Laboratories, Lecture Halls, Drawing Halls,Seminar Hall and Department Library. All the laboratories are well equipped with the latest machineries and relevant software.
The Department of Civil Engineering is Affiliated to AICTE under Anna University Chennai department having excellent Classrooms and Seminar Hall with adequate space. The Classrooms have been equipped with OHP/LCD projector. Our Department offers practical oriented Courses in a perfect academic environment in a fully furnished infrastructure.
Civil engineers design and build many of the things that we use every day. Civil engineers work in the following fields: structures, transport, energy and water and food production. Many civil engineers work in the building industry together with architects, surveyors and building services engineers when designing structures and foundations for large buildings Civil engineers design transport systems and build roads, stations and airports. They also design systems for controlling traffic to ensure effective and safe use of the road system and aim to reduce the impact of roads and traffic on the environment. Civil engineers design and construct all types of power stations and hydroelectric projects.
Civil engineers are also involved in the research that is taking place in harnessing renewable sources of energy such as geothermal and wave power.
Civil engineers design dams to create water storage reservoirs. Hydropower is used to generate electricity or the water may be diverted through tunnels, canals and pipelines to provide irrigation for the land, to transport water to cities, supply safe drinking water to homes and industry after due water treatment by engineers. Engineers also provide the systems for the collection and treatment of sewage so that it can be returned to the environment without causing pollution.
Civil engineers need to be good at maths, be able to communicate their ideas to people and be able to design. They need to be able to think in 3D. Civil engineering utilizes technical information obtained from numerous other sciences, and with the advancement in all types of technologies, Civil engineering has also benefited tremendously.
The future of Civil engineering is expected to be revolutionized by the new technologies including design software, GPS, GIS systems and other latest technical expertise in varied fields.
Technology will continue to make important changes in the application of civil engineering, including the rapid progress in the use of 3-D and 4-D design tools.
COURSE OFFERED
The Department offers B.E.Civil Engineering affiliated to Anna University and approved by AICTE.
PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs)
Graduates of the Civil Engineering Program will achieve:
- To prepare students for successful careers in Civil Engineering field that meets the needs of Indian and multinational companies.
- To develop the confidence and ability among students to synthesize data and technical concepts and thereby apply it in real world problems.
- To develop students to use modern techniques, skill and mathematical engineering tools for solving problems in Civil Engineering.
- To provide students with a sound foundation in mathematical, scientific and engineering fundamentals necessary to formulate, solve and analyze engineering problems and to prepare them for graduate studies.
- To promote students to work collaboratively on multi-disciplinary projects and make them engage in life-long learning process throughout their professional life.
COURSE OUTCOME
On completion of the B.E (Civil engineering) Degree the graduates will have the
- Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
- Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
- Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
- Ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
- Ability to communicate effectively
FACILITIES (LAB DETAILS)
- SURVEYING LAB:Appreciate the need for accurate and thorough note taking in field work to serve as a legal record. Gain the ability to use modern survey equipment to measure angles and distances. The laboratory provides essential surveying equipment for the use of bachelor degree students to make them familiar with practical surveying technique in the construction field and major projects.
- STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LAB: Strength of materials lab is to demonstrate the basic principles in the area of strength and mechanics of materials and structural analysis to undergraduate students through a series of experiments. The students are also introduced to the data acquisition system (Strain gauges and dial gauges etc) used in experimental study.
- CADD: Lab allows the use of software for the preparation of drawings for different engineering works and their design.
- SOIL MECHANICS LABORATORY: The Students Acquire the understanding of basic physical and mechanical properties of soil. Acquire the necessary skill in performing standard laboratory and field tests. Interpret and analyze data and to report and present result in a proper engineering format. Work independently or as a team in organizing and carrying out the experiments/tests.
- CONCRETE AND HIGHWAY LABORATORY: The students will be able to infer the suitability of these materials for construction. They can design the mix, make the specimens and test the same for the strength for comparison with design strength. This laboratory course will help the students to understand the theoretical concepts learned in the course building materials.
- ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY: It provides opportunity to students to determine different parameters of waste water and sewage disposal. It is related to the science of waste management of all types, purification of water, cleaning of contaminated areas, reduction of pollution, and industrial ecology. Technical data obtained due to environmental engineering assists the policy makers in making decisions related to environmental issues.
- FLUID MECHANICS: The Students Understand the physical processes which govern the behavior of fluids on rest and in motion. Confidently pose and solve problems in engineering fluid mechanics. Perform design calculations for pipes.
- SURVEY CAMP: A field activity which provides real application of theoretical principles of surveying and use of different devices and preparation of map, so as to make the students well versed with survey operation.
