Mechanical Engineering is an evergreen branch. The department was established in the academic year 2010. The department offers a four-year degree program in Mechanical Engineering. It has an average annual intake of 60 students.
The sprawling Mechanical Engineering wing accommodates various Laboratories, Lecture Halls, Drawing Halls,Seminar Hall and Department Library. All the laboratories are equipped with the latest machineries and software. A team of dedicated and qualified, faculty members engage the students through up-to-date processes. All the faculty members are post graduates and are actively involved in various research-oriented projects. They have published technical papers in National / International Conferences / Journals.
The goal of the Mechanical Engineering curriculum is to create a lenient undergraduate educational experience in design, modeling, management, engineering science, humanities and fine arts. The principal study topics include fluid and solid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials engineering, manufacturing, energy systems, dynamics and control, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) and others. A proposal to start the Centre of Research recognized by Anna University is also on the cards.
The Department offers B.E.Mechanical Engineering affiliated to Anna University and approved by AICTE.

BASIC WORKSHOP LABORATORY: The Basic workshop laboratory is a centralized facility available in the department of mechanical engineering to familiarize with the basic manufacturing processes and to study the various tools and equipments used, Hands-on training is given in welding, Sheet metal, Foundry, Carpentry, Plumbing, Fitting, etc.,
MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY: The lab is provided with various machineries that help students to study and acquire knowledge related to recent manufacturing process. Students gain practical knowledge about the machineries and the manufacturing process whenever they are provided with hands on experience. This helps them in the industrial manufacturing process.
THERMAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY: This laboratory consists of various components, cut section model and experimental facility of IC engines by varying the fuel, no. of cylinder and types of loading. The laboratory is constructed to provide the experimental knowledge on combustion theory and analyzing the performance of IC engine.
HEAT TRANSFER LABORATORY: This lab has a potential for understanding the concepts of three modes of heat transfer viz., conduction, convection and radiation. The lab is updated with plate type heat exchanger, double pipe heat exchanger and condensation apparatus.
CAD/CAM LABORATORY: The CAD laboratory is a central facility available in the department of mechanical engineering and consists of high end software and hardware for drafting, modeling and analysis. The lab provides digitally integrated environment where all the students and faculty can work with 2-D and 3-D drafting, modeling and analysis packages to design, analyze, simulate and build components. The students are encouraged to learn, practice and apply the knowledge gained from these packages into their projects and research areas.
METROLOGY LABORATORY: The metrology laboratory provides fundamental knowledge on units and standards, measurement methods and selection of appropriate measuring instrument. To achieve closure tolerance, this lab is equipped with digital measuring instruments like Vernier caliper, Dial gauge, Micrometer, Thickness gauge, Sprit level, Profile projector and Tool makers microscope. The students are exposed to learn linear, angular and form measurement with real time machine components.
KINEMATICS AND DYNAMICS LABORATORY: The Kinematics &Dynamics Laboratory is primarily focused on mechanism and dynamic analysis of mechanical system. It is equipped with governor, gyroscope, digital dynamic balancing machine, cam analyzer and torque indicator.
CNC LABORATORY: This lab provides students with recent manufacturing technologies. XLTURN and XLMILL Machines with FANUC integrated turning and milling software are used to train students in programming and manufacturing process CEP programs in CNC are regularly conducted for students.
MECHATRONICS LABORATORY: The Mechatronics lab is a centralized facility that provides students about electronics control hydraulic and pneumatic components integrated with PLC provide enough knowledge about programming for industrial automation
MACHINE DRAWING LABORATORY: The lab provides digitally integrated environment where all the students and faculty can work with 2-D and 3-D drafting and modelling packages to design, analyze and draft components.
On behalf of The Department of Mechanical Engineering, an International conference on “Planning in Supply Chain and Logistics” was conducted on 27.12.2022. The Conference was organized by the Staff & Students of Mechanical Engineering.
On behalf of The Department of Mechanical Engineering, a Technical Symposim “BUOYANCY” is conducted for every year. The symposium is organized by the Staff & Students of Mechanical Engineering. Great achievers in the mechanical field are invited as chief guests and judges. Students from various colleges participate in the various events and win cash prizes and awards.
As part of the Continuous Education Programme (CEP), various mechanical courses for industrial applications are conducted by the department every year for the students of II year, III year and IV year. On completion of the courses, certificates are issued.
To improvise the student knowledge and their interest in academics, Guest Lectures were conducted for II, III and IV years on various topics by various resource persons.

International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking is held on 26th of June every year.
To provide Industrial exposure to students, Industrial visits are arranged by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Students are able to learn how the topics they study are applied in industries. The industrial visits also help the students in their placement opportunities.

Organic farming was initiated by the students and the staff members
An initiative for Organic farming was provided by the students and the staff of Mechanical Engineering. Farming without using harmful pesticides and fertilizers was developed. An extensive area within the college campus was provided by the College Management to support this organic farming. Vegetables like raddish, ladies fingers, brinjal,and many more were grown only by using organic fertilizers and pesticides and was supplied to the College canteen.
Jegaspathi and R.Priyadharshini won 2nd place in the Quiz Competition held at Shanmuganathan College of Engineering and Technology, Pudukkottai on 07-09-2019.

Modern computing facilities are available for students at the Computer Aided Design Laboratory.
The CNC turning centre with programmable turret offered with FANUC emulated control system facilitates for students to learn industrial needs. XLTURN can be integrated and interfaced with robot automatic storage and retrieval system (ASRS), linear conveyor, etc to form FMS and CIM systems.
The department boasts of models and machinery that have been designed and fabricated by the students using the lab resources.
The CNC lab offers training to students, job seekers and candidates enrolled under the PMKVY scheme providing a sea of opportunities in India and abroad.

Mahadir Mohamed, Periya Maruthu Pandian, Lakshmanan and Gopala Krishnan, as their final year project, have innovated a low-cost E-bike Vehicle as low as Rs.35000 with a travelling range of 90 kms @ Rs 7 paise/ km. The E-bike was greatly appreciated and funded by the management. Dr.Manisankar, vice-chancellor, Bharathidasan University appreciated the students for their innovative approach in bringing one the E-bike. Mr. Thambi Ramiah, Actor and Director, Mr. Senthil and Ms. Rajalakshmi, Airtel Super singer title winners, and many other famous personalities enjoyed the bike ride when they visited the college on various occasions.
Students of Mechanical engineering, who always has the hunger to learn came up with a massive idea of setting up “Robotics and Automation Laboratory”. This lab incorporates advanced technologies like IoT controlled equipments, Microprocessor controlled equipments, 3D printer and many more. A large group of students under the supervision of Faculty of Mechanical engineering were involved in the design and development of lab. The lab focusses on training students with basic automation to advanced automation with recent technologies. The lab is also supported with backup power generated using Solar energy. Our final year students Mr. Arunakanth and his team members done this project successfully. This lab is very useful to the upcoming budding Engineers.
